Mixed Use Development

A Mutual Fund Organization approached the architect to re-develop a property in Westlands' Central Business District. The proposal was a mixed use development (MUD) which will infuse life and inspire change in the neighborhood. The board of directors identified a site along Westlands Mpaka Road. The project sought to meet the expectations of the ever demanding URBAN population in Nairobi and to meet client’s objectives.
The site is located in a neighborhood currently undergoing massive re-development. The aim is to take advantage of new planning parameters to maximize return on investment and be at par with the ever changing character within the neighborhood. It was important to understand the key urban elements alive in the environment including the open spaces, the street character, the urban daytime and night time population, socio-economic activities and socio-cultural elements. All of which govern the urban character; the architecture, the growth and the spatial quality of the urban environment.
Graduate Student Accommodation

The University Management Board – University of Nairobi devised several strategies to reduce costs (initial and maintenance) and turnaround time for capital projects. Among those is partnering with private developers to construct quality students’ facilities within/ without university’s grounds.
The UMB – University of Nairobi in collaboration with third year students at the Department of Architecture and Building Science undertook a PILOT PROJECT to mitigate on accommodation challenges facing students. More specifically post-graduate students.
The UMB earmarked a site within Chiromo campus along Prof. Maurice Alala Road, bordered by SWA Café to the West, Physics Department to the North, and Nairobi River Tributary to the South, measuring approximately 30m by 30m. Their intention was to design accommodation space for 6 graduate students (from the School of Built Environment) complete with their support facilities. Through insightful use of five - 40 feet containers which are relatively cheap and readily available at container depot, Industrial area, Nairobi. Special care was to be taken in handling the topography, environmental, technical and social issues presented by both the site and the container.
